Council Member Curtis R. Milteer Sr. Honored for Community Service

SUFFOLK,VIRGINIA(November 21, 2011) - Suffolk City Council Member Curtis R. Milteer, Sr. was honored as the recipient of the Quality of Life Corporation Excellence Award during the 1st Annual Hampton Roads Excellence Awards held Saturday, November 12, 2011 in Virginia Beach, VA.

As the inaugural recipient of the award, Council Member Milteer was selected from a pool of nominees presented to the Executive Director and Board Members of the Quality of Life Corporation. Milteer was identified as the Suffolk leader whose qualities and committed efforts demonstrate excellence in the City of Suffolk. A scholarship has been created in Milteer's name, and this year the Quality of Life Curtis R. Milteer, Sr. Scholarship will be awarded to a student in Suffolk.

Milteer, a native of Suffolk, was educated in Suffolk Public Schools and graduated from East Suffolk High School. Council Member Milteer was first elected to the Suffolk City Council in 1980 and has served as Mayor and Vice Mayor during his years on Council.

Council Member Milteer was honored for his outstanding services to the community, society and humanity. Olivia Dabney, Executive Director of The Quality of Life Foundation, noted, "Mr. Milteer has a broad based, continuing commitment to community service, public service, and charitable contributions of benefit to the community. He demonstrates sustained commitment to meeting Suffolk's needs and fosters the virtues and skills of civic engagement and social responsibility. Mr. Milteer's actions exemplify a caring spirit."

Council Member Milteer's tireless work has resulted in the extension of utilities to over 3,000 families and the advent of a citywide emergency home repair program. Speaking of his award, Mayor Linda T. Johnson advised, "It has been my privilege to work with Councilman Milteer for many years now. I can think of no one who has a greater love for this City than he has, and I'm thrilled that one of our youth will benefit from the scholarship in his honor."

A retired Naval Air Rework Facility supervisor, Milteer has been married to Sarah W. Milteer for over 50 years and has four children. He was the recipient of the 1984 Jessie Rattley Politician Action Award for outstanding contributions in the field of politics. Council Member Milteer also was named the 2005 First Citizen Award winner by the Suffolk Rotary Club.
